Unique Foods: California

When you think of California, you think of beaches, the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park and so much more. You can celebrate everything ocean, amazing marine life to one of the world’s finest aquariums. If it were a country, California would be the 6th largest economy in the world and the 35th most populous. It has long been a subject of interest in the public mind and has often been promoted as a kind of paradise. In the 1960s, popular music groups such as The Beach Boys promoted the image of Californians as laid-back, tanned beach-goers. You can trust that Kathleen Raskin will not only help you find the place of your dreams, but the food of your dreams as well.

Ingredients:

One of the best dishes you can try is the Crab and Shrimp Louis. This California original of seafood atop fresh greens is defined, in part, by its creamy Thousand Island dressing. If you wish, you can use either all shrimp or all crab meat.

4 eggs

1 head shredded lettuce

½ thinly sliced cucumber

1 pound crabmeat

1 pound cooked shrimp

1 peeled, pitted and sliced avocado

10 halved cherry tomatoes

1 cup mayonnaise

½ cup hot chile sauce

3 tablespoons sweet pickle relish

Salt and pepper to taste.

2 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

1 lemon cut into wedges, for garnish.

Steps:

Place eggs in a saucepan

Cover with cold water.

Bring water to a boil.

Cover.

Remove from heat and let eggs stand in hot water for ten to twelve minutes.

Remove from hot water, cool, peel and chop.

Evenly divide the lettuce, cucumbers, crab, shrimp, avocado, tomatoes and eggs between four salad plates.

Prepare the dressing by whisking together the mayonnaise, chili sauce, relish, salt and pepper.

Spoon dressing over the salad and garnish with parsley and lemon.

Other Grub

One of San Francisco’s biggest draws is their sourdough, and when you are there, you have to try either chili or clam chowder bread bowls.  When you are in Hollywood and you want to eat like the stars, try, Goop, the Gwyneth Paltrow brainchild. It is a mere symbol of California’s gross-but-healthy, trend-humping food scene.
